Y.Y. Famous Dumplings

the dragon boat festival (端午節) is just around the corner, i am starting to have cravings for rice dumplings (粽子). most of these rice dumplings are tetrahedral in shape, save for the odd rectangular pillow dumpling and round bowl-like lotus leaf dumpling.

was at jusco 1u yesterday and was surprised to see rice dumplings by Y.Y. Famous dumplings being sold at the non-halal section. they had quite a nice selection, from the alkaline/lye water dumplings (碱水粽), hakka dumplings(五香客家粽), salted pork dumplings, nyonya dumplings (娘惹粽) to the golden chang (黄金粽), which is also the pillow dumpling.

As I have never tried a pillow dumpling, was curious to see what was in it, and how it tasted. The Golden Chang was filled with pork (豬肉), chicken, a chestnut (粟子), salted egg yolk (咸蛋黄), mushrooms (香菇), dried oyster, lap cheong (腊肠) and dried shrimps. quite good, even if a tad salty for me. but i definitely enjoyed it as the ingredients were quite generous and the glutinous rice was rather well flavoured. However, thought it was a little pricey at RM8 each.

Also on promotion was this huge rice dumpling (三味鲍鱼粽) with scallops, shark fin, abalone etc in it. cost a hefty RM198 each! ah, what sheer extravagence esp. considering the humble beginnings of this festival. but if u can afford it and want to indulge, feel free to order one!

  1. OMG! I also bought the same dumpling in 1U last Sunday and going to have it for lunch today. Hahaha..I was eyeing the RM198 giant-sized dumpling but finally decided not too be so greedy and took the RM8 instead.

  2. I saw how they made the huge dumplings on Ho Chak once – looked so filling. The pillow one looks good and so full of “liew”.

  3. I had it for lunch oledi…wah…the moment i break it open, the aroma of the dried oyster filled the air..sedap sedap. Will go back to buy more this weekend.
