Haikara-Style Cafe & Bakery

Have been meaning to go to this Japanese bakery & cafe for sometime, but have not been lucky with catching the opening times. Apparently “Haikara” means stylish, or chic, which is such a unique name for this place. But what interests me most is that they serve charcoal roasted coffee. I thought it was one of those tea places initially but was pleasantly surprised to find out that they serve food too! Pasta, rice, sandwiches etc.

In conjunction of the upcoming Yuletide festivities, they have hung this adorable bread ring adorned with ribbons and plastic bells at the entrance.

The shop interior is a bit tight, but pleasant to the eyes. I love the round paper pendant lamps which has a lace-like pattern on it. There’s also a bar counter instead of just tables and chairs. A collection of Japanese magazines and comics are also available for the customers’ reading pleasure. Probably the owners’ own collection, since they’re both Japanese.

We were very early the first time so they were only serving breakfast and drinks. Breakfast menu consists only of toast and one egg. The bread was baked in their premises though, and tasty quite good! Crisp and buttery. The egg was hard boiled though, and we were expecting soft boiled ones. But a flip thru the menu made me resolve to come back on a lunch hour the next time.

So when we did manage to come back for lunch on a separate occasion, the place was packed and the only table that was not taken up was the sole one outside. And about half of them were Japanese! As the Japanese couple are the only ones waiting on the patrons, service was quite hurried, but still polite. The daily lunch sets are written on a board for easy referring and we all ordered off there instead of from the menu decorated with Japanese paper dolls. While we were waiting, we were served small glasses of cold water, infused with mint leaves.

The Seafood Aglio Olio Pasta was served al dente with prawns, squid rings, minced squid (!) and surprisingly, broccoli florets. Doesn’t taste like the conventional Aglio Olio pastas but still very delicious.

I chose the “Roko Moko” which is described as a Hawaiian Hamburger Rice. Must admit, I didn’t really know what to expect. So what it was was actually this plate of rice, topped with sliced cabbage, a burger patty, slathered with brown sauce and a sunny side up. And on the sides, some sliced tomatoes and Japanese cucumbers. It smelled wonderful when it was being served and it did not disappoint! The patty was juicy and took in the tangy flavours of the sauce very well.

This is the Chicken Kerokke, which is essentially chicken croquettes, served with butter rolls and a side salad. Sounds like a small portion, but is very filling. But the best bit is probably how the croquettes are deep fried but doesn’t taste oily at all. Just crisp on the outside and yummy creaminess on the inside.

There’s complimentary soup for all orders, but coffee with the set lunches only. Not sure what the clear soup is, but it tasted alright. As for the coffee, it was very fragrant but not bitter. I could just drink it with the given cream and not add any sugar. And I love the mini milk jug (yes, gushing like a girly girl now :P )!

Even though I noticed a lot of people having desserts or buying bread, we didn’t get any coz we were really stuffed by then. Looks like another return visit! Hehe. Two things though, prices are a bit on the high side (RM25++ for sets) and due to the lack of help, be prepared to wait a bit during peak hours so come here if you have time to spare.

Edited: Also tried the sandwiches and Mentaiko Pasta on another return visit. The sandwiches were not your everyday plain tuna mayo and egg ones, but the tuna mayo one had freshly diced onions in it, adding a sweet crunch to it.

As for the Mentaiko Pasta, we weren’t too sure what to expect. Creamy spaghetti with roe, and seaweed! Despite the seemingly strange combination, it was surprisingly good! Rich and creamy and I was easily hooked. Yum.

Restoran Telok Pulai BKT, Klang

Driving down to Klang for Bat Kut Teh (BKT) is a worthwhile pursuit for food lovers as Klang’s believed to be the “birthplace” of BKT. The dish is reported to have originated from Port Klang where coolies working at the port in the 19th century ate BKT as a health tonic to gain energy. So where else to go than Klang to sample the best?

I have been brought to this BKT restaurant twice now by local Klangites and I’m fairly convinced that this is the shop that eatingasia went to. There are so many BKT shops in Klang bearing the name “Telok/Teluk Pulai” that it can get very confusing. The most famous one is of course the corner shop near Jusco.

But despite that, this shop pulls its own faithful crowd as most of the tables are already taken when we arrived. Typically a breakfast dish, authentic BKT fans can take the copious amount of meat and soup even if it’s barely 8am.

After ordering, the must have sidekick – dough crullers to soak into the flavourful herbal soup was served to us. Half of the plate was gone even before the good stuff came. Lol. Only complaint was that it wasn’t fresh or crisp enough. But then, that doesn’t really make a difference when you use it to sop up all the soup later. And yes first up was the fear factor part – the stomach and intestines. Oh so good.

We also tried the dry BKT. Pork cuts cooked with dried chilli, dried cuttlefish shreds and sliced okra. This doesn’t taste anything like the soup version as it’s sticky and throughly infused with the flavours of the dried chilli and cuttlefish. No herbal taste here, but still perfect with white rice. The taste grew on me and I found myself scooping for more meat here. However, felt some of the pork cuts were too big, as the middle parts didn’t really get flavoured by the sauce.

The works – Ribs, Spare ribs, Riblets with strings of enoki mushrooms, sheets of tofu and squares of beancurds with a few leaves of lettuce in a steaming hot claypot dish. The porky broth was dark coloured and tasted hearty with a hint of the sweetness of the herbal concoction.

Blanched bok choy topped with oyster sauce and fried garlic bits to balance our meal. This simple vege dish was suppose to be the lighter bit of our meal but it had too much oil doused on it and we ended up not finishing it. Pity as it would have been a nice and crunchy accompaniment to the meal.

Another special that this BKT shop offer is Assam Fish but we didn’t try any as we were not sure if we could finish what we ordered to begin with. However price was a little steeper here than we expected as it came up to about RM170 for a double portion of what’s depicted here.

Fullhouse, NZX Ara Damansara

We thought it was about time we headed into the depths of Ara Damansara to find this NiuZeXui (牛车水 ) place that has been popping up in blogs. Even though there are 2 access points (one from Subang, the other Kelana Jaya), I still find that it’s a wee bit obscure. But must give the place credit lah, as it’s quite a “happening petaling st” of sorts with its mish mash of concept stalls. But occupancy rate is still quite low as open stalls were less than what we were expecting.

At the moment, the most eye-catching decor here must be from this lifestyle cafe – Fullhouse. Esp. that cute mini cooper at the store front!

The 3 storey lot is converted into a “bungalow” complete with a garden, a 4 poster bed, shower area etc. Apart from serving food, they display clothes, accessories, house decor items which is up for sale. All in all, this place is made for the ladies in mind, esp. those who have a penchant for Korean inspired fashion and cute accessories. Their dreamhouse!

While waiting for the food to come, most of our group were busy exploring the displayed wares inside. Drinks came pretty quickly and they all had this delightful spoon stirrer thing. I believe even those are for sale! Hehe.

We started with the Pineapple Chicken Salad (RM8.90) which was quite delicious. Maybe because I thought that the tart sweetness of the pineapple slices went particularly well with the grilled chicken pieces.

Then we also shared a portion of Onion Rings with Garlic Mayonnaise (RM8.90). As it was of the frozen variety, tasted pretty much like those served at fast food franchises.

My Gamberi Spaghetti which was supposed to be al dente spaghetti with tiger prawns, garlic, chilli and olive oil. The prawns were definitely not tiger prawns but overall it tasted pretty alright. Tad on the salty side for me. Makes a nice change from the usual creamy or tomato based sauces.

The Breaded Chicken Chop (RM12.90). Portion size was quite big as they used a whole thigh. Very the Chicken Maryland but quite nice and crispy. The coleslaw also had bits of raisins in it, which seems to be becoming more popular with chefs as I have had such coleslaw in a few different restaurants now.

The Wok-Sear Chicken Chop (RM14.90) is stated as an all-time favourite in their menu. The chicken is seared and placed on a bed of mashed potatoes, blanched carrots and bok choi before being drizzled with this brown sauce cooked with raisins. Quite an interesting twist to the flavours as it was slight sweet, savoury and tangy at the same time.

Fish & Chips (RM12.90) has the same breadcrumb coat as the chicken chop. Was quite nice but I felt the chips were a little stale-ish with the taste of old oil (if you know what I mean).

I was first attracted to the Pan Seared Dory Fish (RM11.90) but glad I went for the spaghetti instead as the mashed potatoes would have filled me up instantly! The 3 pieces of seared Dory fish was quite tasty but I found it a bit strange that they would serve it with the baby bok choi. The sauteed mushrooms also tasted a tad sweet which I thought didn’t go too well with the overall flavour.

We had a Chocolate Brownie (RM7.90) to share as they were out of tiramisu that night. Instead of Vanilla ice-cream, it was yam ice-cream that was served with the brownie. Personally I felt that the brownie was a bit too sweet so I would give this a miss the next time.

I think we will be coming back here as we loved the ambience and atmosphere. It was rather relaxing and intriguing at the same time. Plus, it does make for a good ice breaker! The menu has its hits and misses and there’s definitely room for improvement, but the affordable prices does encourage us to keep it in mind whenever we’re in the area.

Frames, TTDI Plaza

After the last few posts on eating outside of Klang Valley, am finally back to exploring eateries inside Klang valley. No more driving hundreds of kilometers over the weekend, phew. Decided to just hang out with a good friend at TTDI plaza on a lazy Sunday. Having read up about this place in Klue she suggested we meet here.

The minimalistic b&w look from the outside sat well with me. There are 2 sections, the smoking and non smoking area. But the owners have also thoughtfully sectioned the smoking area into part of the air-conditioned area instead of just exposing the patrons to the outside elements. Hehe.

True to its name, there are framed photos lining the wall which I heard is up for sale too. With the ambient lighting, it’s quite a relaxing atmosphere. With a mainly black & white colour scheme to suit its minimalist interior, they also had splashes of purple in the form of throw cushions, lampshades etc.

I didn’t really know what to make of the menu which had sandwiches, pasta, asian food, western food etc all thrown into it. Thankfully they had a page with their recommendations, along with photos! Sure makes life easier.

And they also have quite a decent range of drinks and we were spoilt for choice. In the end, she chose the Deep Purple (RM7.90), an Italian soda combination of grape, mure and curacao. It was served with 2 watermelon balls, and once stirred, became the colour of its name.

I chose a pineapple mocktail – Match Maker (RM9.90), which was quite refreshing with a tinge of sour.

To start, we shared a Gratin (RM13.90), their signature french original with potatoes, cream, milk and cheese. Very rich and creamy. Hearty comfort food but a tad too rich for me at the end.

I chose the Chicken Tikka (RM19.90) because I was tempted by the description of “two skewers of succulent chicken kebabs served with toasted tortillas”. The marinade of aromatic spices and yogurt was very flavourful and true to its word, the chicken cutlets were juicy and succulent. Sliced bell peppers, mushrooms and whole shallots were used to further enhance the flavours.

On the side was a garden salad and a cucumber & tomato salad. At first I assumed the cucumber & tomato salad was akin to that of a raita or at least was well mixed with yogurt but it tasted more like plain mayonnaise. No chutney either but pretty yummy still.

My friend’s choice was the Mushroom Parmigiano (RM23.90) which is described as “Sauteed mixed wild mushrooms on slice of toasted ciabatta, topped with melted Cheddar & Parmesan cheese.” I don’t know about wild mushrooms as I saw mostly mushrooms of the button, shiitake and oyster kind. I tasted quite a heavy balsamic vinegar taste on them, which didn’t really tickle my fancy as much. Sure I like dipping my bread into olive oil and balsamic vinegar, but when it comes to mushrooms, I think I would have preferred something with a cream base.

We were just hanging around and enjoying the free wi-fi when we were presented with a complimentary slice of lemon cheesecake. What a delightful surprise! It had a moist, smooth and velvety texture which was very agreeable with us.

I quite enjoyed my brunch here so I reckon that this place would see a return visit from me. Afterall, service and food were not bad, and taking into account the cosy ambience, a great place to catch up with old friends indeed.

Apong Guan, Penang.

We were driving down Burma Road when I spotted this Apong stall. I think it was the colour of the pushcart that caught my eye. It was only after we were parked and headed for the stall that I noticed the crowd. As we made our orders, we were informed that most of them made orders of twenty to thirty pieces so we had about an 25 min wait. And to imagine we only ordered 3 pieces (*blush*). But still Mr.Uan Cheng Guan said sorry, we had to wait in the queue. And we did since we were in no hurry and the fella seemed so friendly and amicable. So was his wife who was helping out. She even told me I could try making one when the crowd thins. But it never did, and during our wait, we saw numerous cars stopping to ask how long it’ll take before driving off. Or if they were willing to wait, Mrs.Uan will tell to stay in the car and she’ll bring it to them when it was ready.

We opted to stand at the side and watch go about making these soft, fluffy pancakes. The flour batter was pre-mixed but eggs were added in later, which helps keep it fresh. The smaller batches of batter with egg was then poured into the 9 hole griddle and while it’s cooking, Mr.Uan deftly slices the bananas and starts distributing them. Just before they are ready, only is the corn spooned in.

There’s no rushing as he wants to ensure that everything is cooked so that the standards of the taste is maintained, hence the wait.

The ready soft, fluffy pancake with banana and corn. Moist and delicious. And best of all, not too sweet. Worth the 25 min wait to me. Plus, we were entertained by Mr. Uan singing away. So if you spot it and have the time to wait, do try these excellent pancakes. They also accept phone bookings (if you’re buying in bulk) at 016-409 3701.

T-Bowl Restaurant, Queensbay Mall Penang

In a country that has no qualms about concept copying, with our own Malaysian Idol, and other reality tv shows etc it’s no surprise to me that someone has finally jumped on the toilet-themed concept restaurant bandwagon which first surfaced in Taiwan. Since I was in Penang briefly for work, decided to go and see if they managed to pull it off. Afterall, I’m not sure how I’d feel dining in the “toilet”. Hehe.

It took me a while to locate this place even though it’s near the GSC cineplex as there are still ongoing shop renovations and the usual traffic was diverted. The shop decor is not as realistic as the one in Taiwan but has managed to reproduce about a 80% likeness by using coloured toilet bowls with various lids, shower heads, shower curtains, bathtub/sink supported glass tables etc.

I was a little wary about sitting on the toilet bowl at first as it was not bolted down to the floor but it was actually quite sturdy. One thing though, these seats are not made for comfort. Definitely not comfy enough for me to want to loiter around after my meal coz the lids were hard! And there were some issues with the table height as the bathtub could get in the way of one’s knees.

Our appetiser, Deep Fried Dumplings (日式炸水饺) was quite normal looking. No bathtub or squat toilet shaped bowl. Served with wasabi mayo, it was not bad though I didn’t quite like the filling, which had the consistency and bouncy texture of a fishcake or fishballs rather than minced meat. But the outer layer was crisp.

In line with the toilet theme, it’s no surprise that the chefs decided to make their signature dish appear like a pile of dung. And yes, it’s in the form of “Signature Sausage” (镇店屎王) which is actually a skinny long chicken sausage twisted and drizzled with sauce to give it the poop look. Then they garnished it with greens and some ham & cheese rolls (toilet paper? lol). Tastewise, it was alright though we felt that the sausage was a little too much as we felt like we couldn’t finish it in the end.

They had a lot of HK cafe cuisine in their menu and I ended up choosing the Cheese Baked Rice with Seafood (芝士炬海鲜饭). It was served in a ceramic toilet bowl, complete with the valve closet! Well, I thought it was more cute than revolting, so of course it didn’t repulse me. Pretty tasty but portion size was so-so only, though ingredients used were ample; 2 prawns, some fish fillets, a couple squid rings with crabstick and broccoli topped the rice with cheese.

As a concept restaurant, I think it has its novelty. But food wise, it was quite average tasting. And if you’re one of those kind who has a very visual imagination, I guess sitting on the toilet bowl for long would be sure to stir up some crap. Lol. But really, with people using a jailhouse, hospitals, the toilet etc as restaurant themes, what’s next?

Hoong Tho, Ipoh Old Town.

Making a detour in Ipoh enroute to Penang has always been a must with us. But being quite unfamiliar with the roads, somehow I always end up in Old Town (must be subconsciously craving white coffee, lol) and the locals should know that dinner places in Old Town is quite scarce as night falls. So that’s how I ended up at Hoong Tho, the only shop open along the stretch.

The place has been around since the ’60s and sells mainly noodle dishes and confectionery.

We started with Stir fried fish paste with ginger (姜葱鱼滑) which was cooked with stuff like sliced carrots, sliced chillies, spring onion stalks etc. The fish paste texture was not as bouncy which is probably a good thing. Quite tasty though a wee bit on the oily side.

We had the Stewed Noodles (玲珑烧面) coz I was a bit attracted by the chinese name “Ling Long”. Hehe. Emperor noodles were used. Even though there wasn’t much ingredients apart from a few pieces of meat, sliced carrots, some cabbage leaves etc, it tasted full of wok hei.

On the side we ordered a portion of Signature Dumplings (招牌水饺) which were okay only. They used fish paste as the filling which is not really my cuppa tea. Prefer minced meat. Heh.

I can’t remember how much the dinner cost exactly but it was around RM20+ with drinks which is pretty ok. Not a bad choice for dinner but I think next time I’m in town, I’ll take J2kfm’s advice and try out Kafe Yoon Wah.

Kluang Night Eats

As night falls in Kluang, we still had eateries to explore.

The restaurant bearing 2 names near Sungai Mengkibol. But it’s more commonly known as Ah Fu Satay (阿褔沙爹) by the locals. It’s near this open playground with big ant sculptures which is quite strange. :P

Here’s the most famous hawker stall in this food court like place. The satay & fried chicken wings stall. We ordered pork and pig intestines satay. Only 2 sticks of the latter, which is placed at the most right corner of the plate. The meat was very well marinated but the peanut sauce was not too fabulous. Pair it with kajang’s satay sauce and I’ll definitely be wowed.

Anyway, the star dish of the night was the fried chicken wings. I have heard my friends raving about it and I was dubious to begin with but it sure knocked my socks off!! Truly finger licking good.

Deep fried Nam Yue Chicken Legs (南乳鸡脚). Much nicer than I expected and I’m not even a huge fan of both ingredients. But somehow this worked and we found ourselves taking them back to snack in front of the telly even.

Chee Cheong Fun (猪肠粉) with both char siew and prawns. Not too good as the rice sheets were on the thick side. Bit bland tasting also but I still managed to have quite a few chunks as I like my food on the less salty end.

Our oyster omelette. The oysters you spot are the only oysters in the omelette. The rest are all eggs. Mediocre only.

Overall, come here for the satay and deep fried chicken. There’s also grilled fish and western fare but those we didn’t manage to try. Also available are iced desserts Chinese style like “Six Taste Soup” (六味汤), Sea coconut (海底椰) etc.

I kept spotting beef ball noodles stalls so I asked for them. And my friend brought me to this shop, Sin Hon Kee which had “al fresco” seats Malaysian style, i.e. plastic table with stools on the road lah. The place was quite busy, which is always an encouraging sight with me. Hehe. I didn’t manage to snap a good shot of the uncle who was cooking away but could see he was very intent in his tasks.

We asked for the dry version even though there’s the soup one too coz I noticed lots of people ordering the dry one. It looks nondescript when served but once mixed well and drizzled with the accompanying soup, it tastes pretty yummy. Simple, but good.

Apart from beef balls, they also serve pork balls so we ordered both. The beef balls were really yummy. I could taste the beef essence in every bite! For once the pork balls paled in comparison. Anyhow, was munching away happily on the beef balls throughout the meal.

Kluang Day Eats

There’s really not much to do in Kluang unless you want to do Gunung Lambak. So what does a foodie do? Eat. Hehe.

Apart from the coffee and toast, Kluang’s also famous for curry noodles. We headed off to one of the old names – Botak Curry Noodles. Apparently the name originated from the bald cook! Hehe. But the son who was manning the stall only had short, cropped hair. There are 2 stalls, with different siblings taking care of their own respective stalls. We went to the one that’s a shop by itself near the Kluang police station.

The owner’s love for liquor and alcohol is apparent by his collection of alcohol bottles lined up against the walls. Also, the psychedelic ceilings were quite a change. Colourful indeed.

The delicious looking bowl of curry noodles, topped with bean sprouts, char siew, cockles, fish cake, pork skin etc. Quite unusual for me to have the pork skin on curry noodles. But as it’s pretty tasteless to begin with, it soaked up the curry like a sponge. The fish cake (on the most right) didn’t appeal to me as it was was somewhat dry and rubbery. So that was one topping we could do without. But the main star was still the curry. And it was good! And there was this delectable side dish of chilli which I forgot to photograph but added such oomph to the curry.

Kit Siong Cafe is a typical breakfast coffeeshop in Kluang. Most locals come here because they have quite a few hawker stalls, incl. dim sum.

These dry curry noodles were ordered from this stall selling “KL Hawker Food”. Haha, the words KL sure were persuasive. It was pretty decent though and I am starting to like Kluang noodles. Word has it the noodles are all from one supplier so every stall’s noodles taste the same. Nice bite to it. And it does have its signature broader, yellow look.

The main reason why we came here was due to this. My friend’s sister recommended the “Turkish Bread” which I think is essentially pita bread with filling. When their first tried it, it was filled to brim with mayo tuna. But on this visit, ours was filled with coleslaw and miniscule amounts of white tuna. Lol. But must admit the pita pocket was nicely toasted.

I was also brought to Chop Foo Chow for their wide selection of baos. As it was already nearing late afternoon, the shop was a bit more empty. But their chillers held lots of pre-made baos for people to buy back to steam.

The mini baos that we had. Dough was quite thick and taste was nondescript so not memorable with me.

The glutinous rice bao. As you can see, bit lopsided in filling with the meat spread thinly on one end only. Tastewise, it was ok only ler.

After all the plain baos, we decided to skip the others and ordered one steamed pork ribs. Kinda mediocre tasting also.

Must admit that nothing here really tickled my fancy. Might as well cross the road to go over for Tangkak (or spelt Tong Jiat here) beef noodles. Hehe.
