Fullhouse, NZX Ara Damansara

We thought it was about time we headed into the depths of Ara Damansara to find this NiuZeXui (牛车水 ) place that has been popping up in blogs. Even though there are 2 access points (one from Subang, the other Kelana Jaya), I still find that it’s a wee bit obscure. But must give the place credit lah, as it’s quite a “happening petaling st” of sorts with its mish mash of concept stalls. But occupancy rate is still quite low as open stalls were less than what we were expecting.

At the moment, the most eye-catching decor here must be from this lifestyle cafe – Fullhouse. Esp. that cute mini cooper at the store front!

The 3 storey lot is converted into a “bungalow” complete with a garden, a 4 poster bed, shower area etc. Apart from serving food, they display clothes, accessories, house decor items which is up for sale. All in all, this place is made for the ladies in mind, esp. those who have a penchant for Korean inspired fashion and cute accessories. Their dreamhouse!

While waiting for the food to come, most of our group were busy exploring the displayed wares inside. Drinks came pretty quickly and they all had this delightful spoon stirrer thing. I believe even those are for sale! Hehe.

We started with the Pineapple Chicken Salad (RM8.90) which was quite delicious. Maybe because I thought that the tart sweetness of the pineapple slices went particularly well with the grilled chicken pieces.

Then we also shared a portion of Onion Rings with Garlic Mayonnaise (RM8.90). As it was of the frozen variety, tasted pretty much like those served at fast food franchises.

My Gamberi Spaghetti which was supposed to be al dente spaghetti with tiger prawns, garlic, chilli and olive oil. The prawns were definitely not tiger prawns but overall it tasted pretty alright. Tad on the salty side for me. Makes a nice change from the usual creamy or tomato based sauces.

The Breaded Chicken Chop (RM12.90). Portion size was quite big as they used a whole thigh. Very the Chicken Maryland but quite nice and crispy. The coleslaw also had bits of raisins in it, which seems to be becoming more popular with chefs as I have had such coleslaw in a few different restaurants now.

The Wok-Sear Chicken Chop (RM14.90) is stated as an all-time favourite in their menu. The chicken is seared and placed on a bed of mashed potatoes, blanched carrots and bok choi before being drizzled with this brown sauce cooked with raisins. Quite an interesting twist to the flavours as it was slight sweet, savoury and tangy at the same time.

Fish & Chips (RM12.90) has the same breadcrumb coat as the chicken chop. Was quite nice but I felt the chips were a little stale-ish with the taste of old oil (if you know what I mean).

I was first attracted to the Pan Seared Dory Fish (RM11.90) but glad I went for the spaghetti instead as the mashed potatoes would have filled me up instantly! The 3 pieces of seared Dory fish was quite tasty but I found it a bit strange that they would serve it with the baby bok choi. The sauteed mushrooms also tasted a tad sweet which I thought didn’t go too well with the overall flavour.

We had a Chocolate Brownie (RM7.90) to share as they were out of tiramisu that night. Instead of Vanilla ice-cream, it was yam ice-cream that was served with the brownie. Personally I felt that the brownie was a bit too sweet so I would give this a miss the next time.

I think we will be coming back here as we loved the ambience and atmosphere. It was rather relaxing and intriguing at the same time. Plus, it does make for a good ice breaker! The menu has its hits and misses and there’s definitely room for improvement, but the affordable prices does encourage us to keep it in mind whenever we’re in the area.

Looks interesting to try. Presentation is fresh. Perhaps the bok choy is there for colour cause if the dory and the mashed potatoes and the sauce makes the whole dish looks white? So, the chefs have to colour the plate.

Should have aglio olio with king prawns or some orange spaghetti… ;P

epicuriousgirl says: haha, you have a point there. but I think spinach would be a better accompaniment, and it’s green 😛
