Bukit Bintang Wet Market Old School Breakfast.

one of my friend enjoys going to coffeeshops in KL and just sit there and drink his tea leisurely in the manner of the elderly uncles. and today he thought he’ll bring me to try some excellent “hainan tea” (concoction of coffee mixed with tea) and toast at the Bukit Bintang Wet Market. He told me, just look out for the red chairs and red plastic tables where the crowd gathers, under the canopy of outdoor cafe umbrellas. true enough, all the red plastic tables were taken up and most people were enjoying their half-boiled eggs and toasted buns outside an intermediate lot that is bustling with people toasting bread and steeped with history. a sticker from the tv programme “Ho Chak!” and a newspaper cutting pasted on a mirror tells me we’ve found the right place.

despite the brisk business, turnover is fast and we found ourselves seated in no time. i didn’t feel like coffee today so i ordered “ying yong nai cha” (milk tea) instead of the famous aromatic “hainan tea”. the toasted buns were served very quickly whereas the half-boiled eggs (in boiling hot water in a tin cup) came about 5 mins later. even though the toasted buns were wonderfully crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, i had only half a serving as i’m not a huge fan of “roti kahwin” (bread with sweet kaya & slab of cold butter).

and as usual, my friend chose to sit there, to enjoy the atmosphere even long after his toasted bun and half-boiled eggs have been washed down by the milky goodness of the tea. and i continued to fidget, wondering why he won’t get a move on. lol. talk about an odd couple eating breakfast together. but how else would i discover old school gems like these if not for him?
