Sarawak Laksa

A couple of weeks ago I asked Jasmine why does she have a cooking tag in this blog. She explained that when she has time she cooks too and will blog about it. Since I had some Sarawak Laksa paste, we recently decided to cook it to celebrate Malaysia on September 16. So yeay, my first cooking post here!

The paste that I had was Barrett’s Sarawak Sambal Laksa which you can purchase from their website. Following the cooking directions behind the packet, I made the laksa soup the night before. I boiled 2.5 litres of chicken and prawn stock first, then I cooked the chicken breasts in it for shredding later.

The next day, Jas popped on over and we made the laksa soup proper by adding the paste and belacan. Since she was the Sarawak native, I relied heavily on her taste buds to adjusti the flavors :) She also made the sambal belacan like a pro. We cooked the noodles, prawns, bean sprouts and omelette then plated it all up for photos!

I plated my Sarawak Laksa like a noob. lol. I used a plate and poured the soup after placing all the laksa ingredients. #epicfail I know. lol.


Whereas Jas plated her laksa like a boss complete with sambal belacan and lime.

The 300g packet of Barrett’s Sarawak laksa paste states it cooks for 2 but we managed to get 7 servings out of it! So if you’re thinking of a party idea, consider making Sarawak laksa. It is easy to make and super tasty. Be sure to take some photos and let us know how it goes!

JTean Kitchen, SS2 PJ

If you are a regular foodie and you follow most mainstream (and non-halal) eating floggers, you must have heard of JTean Kitchen. Located in SSTwo Mall, this place markets its cuisine as fusion bak kut teh. C’mon, that sounds pretty awesome right? A few weeks ago, I rounded up some kakis and we decided to sample the food so many flogs out there have been raving about.

Firstly, service here wasn’t fantastic. We booked the place for 11 pax but a few cancelled. As it was close to lunch time and more people were streaming in, we told them in good faith that they can split the tables for other diners. In return, the waitress gave us super rude attitude, yo. She was muttering to herself, yelling at other staff to help her carry the table, looking extremely annoyed. Another waitress took our order and she didn’t speak English. That posed a problem for bananas like me but I didn’t expect this to happen in a restaurant with an English name + menu and located in affluent PJ. But she was helpful regardless and Mandarin speakers in the crew took charge of the ordering.

The JPork BKT Burger (RM7.90). We came with high expectations based on several blog reviews but were sorely disappointed. The patty only had a hint of BKT taste. Otherwise, all I could taste was the peppery, tangy mayonnaise sauce. What is it even doing in the burger? Boo.

Tean’s BKT that had a mix of ribs, pork belly and stomach (RM20.90). Sadly, it was nothing to shout about. It was like any other average BKT and tasted quite plain.

The J-Ribs served with wedges, side salad and a special sauce (RM34.90). I thought this was the ‘yummiest’ tasting one, relative to the other so-so dishes. The ribs itself were charred nicely and retained some juiciness of the meat but the flavor did not really come through. I was convinced the special sauce was just ordinary black pepper sauce.

Stewed Chicken Feet, Tofu and Mushrooms (RM12.90). This was also pretty average. It had no real oomph to it – no sharp herbal notes or a heaty, flavorful kick.

We all left the place feeling kinda disappointed and our bill for 7 of us came up to RM215.00. Don’t think any of us will be going back anytime soon. I had to eat in Hungry Hog for dinner just to make myself feel better. The redeeming factor for this place perhaps was the decently-priced drinks list with quite a nice selection of ‘fancy’ tea (although I like to kick it old school with pu er in a clay teapot that you make yourself). Oh and SSTwo Mall’s parking is still free.

Happy City Seafood Steamboat, Kepong

A sudden urge to eat hot, soupy steamboat took over me a few weekends ago. I ended up at Happy City Seafood Steamboat, located near Carrefour and Happy City Food Court along Jalan Kepong. This place does live seafood steamboat and the ingredients are as fresh as you can get.

This place offers ala carte and some set meals for the indecisive – like me :) We settled for the RM79.90 set that feeds 2-3 pax. You also get to pick your soup. There are several options ranging from porridge to the free ‘yin yang’ soup based. I picked the Drunken Pot (RM15) that had Chinese herbs in it like goji and dong quai. There is also a bottle of Chinese wine on the side for the y’know, drunken effect :) So in this particular set, you get …

… clams

… red snapper

… awesome live prawns that jump out of the plate

… and their ‘steamboat set’ x 1 of meat/fishballs, seafood, vegetables, noodles and egg. Yup, one of everything. Have fun splitting and halving the quail egg, mussel, tofu etc. lol.

With each round of adding ingredients into the pot, I added more and more Chinese wine to the soup. By the end of the meal, the soup was sweet and tangy with herbal notes. It was easily the BEST soup I’ve ever had with my usual steamboat finale of yee mee and three-quarter cooked egg. Ended the meal by downing a glass of honey sea coconut drink, it was an amazing meal, yo.

Service was quick and top notch. I initially had trouble finding a table but one of their Burmese waiters spotted me waiting and cleared a table meant for storing spare pots and cutleries. Very cool. The gas tank also died on us and they replaced it in no time. My only beef with this place? They don’t do mud crabs :(

Parking wasn’t easy that night as all of Kepong and outsiders converged to eat in this area that also houses several other steamboat restaurants. But trust me, after having such a huge, scrumptious meal – I appreciated the short walk back to the car. I am already planning to take my family here to try this place. Heh.

Ngau Kee Beef Noodles, Jalan Alor

Ngau Kee Beef Noodles is one of my must-eats whenever I have friends visiting Malaysia.

It is actually located along Tengkat Tung Shin which is parallel to Jalan Alor but most people don’t know the little road actually has a name. Besides, you can’t miss it anyway – not with a huge neon sign with a cow and words stating it as the “Famous Beef Noodle” placed on the rooftops while the little stall only has about 10 tables located on a five foot way!

We ordered their kon lo (dry) beef noodles. The noodles are springy the way I like them and the mince beef is as good as I remember first eating it back in 2002. And like with all good food, I don’t spend time trying to figure out what’s in it because I am scoffing it down by the mouthfuls. But if I had to put my finger on what makes the mince beef so good – I’d say some voodoo ganja. lol.

I also ordered some add ons – beef and pork balls on the side. They give you that extra chew when you eat in the same bite with the beef noodles. So what you get is an explosion of beefy goodness, best washed down with some clear soup (that doesn’t make you super thirsty, btw). Ngau Kee also does pork mince with lo shu fun and kway teow noodles in small, medium and large portions. Don’t forget to try it with their special chili sauce found on every table. Prices here starts from RM5 and add ons can go up to RM8.50.

They open til late so if you’re looking for an alternative to mamak and Bak Kut Teh, there is always Ngau Kee.

p/s: There is also a sugar cane stall next to Ngau Kee that does a great sugar cane juice with lemon!

D’naim Nasi Kukus, Pantai Dalam

Me: “This nasi kukus is quite possible the best nasi kukus I’ve ever had in my life!”
Friends: “Sure or not?”

lol. All my conversations with friends about this little nasi kukus (‘steamed rice’) stall located in Pantai Dalam starts with that expression.

Tucked amongst a row of stalls near the Pantai Dalam KTM Komuter station, D’naim is unassuming from afar. But I have driven past the stall often enough to see that it is constantly buzzing with customers – some seated with friends and others deciding to bungkus instead resulting in a short queue.

The rice is steamed to fluffy perfection served with special spicy sauce (a mix of chili, curry and sambal), a few slivers of cucumbers and the meat(s) of your choice. My pick is always the ayam goreng (fried chicken). You make your choice at the counter and watch it get packed in brown paper and banana leaves. There are no plates so it is all eco-friendly while forks and spoons are optional since nasi kukus is best eaten with your fingers. Regular mamak drinks are readily available, so just holler for it.

It is not too hard to find. Here’s the GoogleMap link. From the NPE from KL to PJ, take the Kampung Pantai Dalam turn off and you will see the stall on your left, shortly after the Pantai Dalam KTM Komuter station. Alternatively, if you are going through Gasing Indah, just go along Jalan 5/46 and Jalan 1/132 and Jalan Pantai Dalam (it’s a straight road) – slow down when you start seeing stalls on both sides of the narrow road, D’naim will be on the right.

Yellow Cab Pizza, KL

Hi all!

Sorry it took me ages to get my first post up. Judging by how little time I have for the internet these days, I can only quickly give a review but I’ll make it worth your while by making it picture-intensive instead :) I took a trip downtown to check out Yellow Cab Pizza Co. It’s like your regular takeaway pizza parlour but I think they are trying out-gourmet its mainstream competitors like Pizza Hut and Domino’s.

It was very cheesy but there was something sour about it. It’s not stringy like Pizza Hut’s and the crust felt half-cooked because after biting it in half, you can see raw-ish dough. But the vegetables were very, very fresh and the juices were still intact with every bite.

The base was the same as the GG, no good. I wasn’t sure what Southwestern salsa was like. The chicken strips looked more like cubes. Tomatoes were fresh and it neutralised the sour cheese which topped the pizza.

Overall, I was not impressed. I read rave reviews about the place but all I can say it’s far too overpriced for run-off-the-mill pizzas. I’d recommend it for people who are tired of mainstream pizza brands (but so many other pizza options around!) and don’t mind paying big bucks for fresh ingredients. Prices for the pizzas range from RM19 to RM28.60 for the 10″ pizzas, RM30.50 to RM44.70 for the 14″ pizzas and RM47.80 to RM69.70 for the 18″ pizzas (it’s huge!). Other stuff like pastas, calzone and potato halves are between RM12.80 to RM16.80.

Oh and the cheese … I have no idea what funky mozzarella they were using but it was sour. They might want to consider changing their pepper sauce to Tabasco’s because whatever that they served, tasted yucks. I’m unlikely to go back. I prefer Marco’s Pizza anytime!
