Screaming Bananas

It was my first time eating at the office blocks at Phileo Damansara 1 and I wasn’t feeling like Secret Recipe. Lucky politikus recommended Screaming Bananas, which served both asian or western fare. Headed there and browsed through the set lunch menu which offered quite a nice selection. After we made our choice, could bask in the Christmassy mood some more.

They had quite a few medium sized Christmas trees by some tables and our table happened to be one of them. It amused me to see how they only decorated the top half of the tree as the bottom half’s view was obscured by the tables. Lol.

I chose the Nasi Ulam set. One can have the option of beef rendang, chicken rendang or sotong sambal with the herbed rice. I chose the beef and it was tender and delicious. The rice was surprisingly good. Truly enjoyed it. Was served with blanched long bean, pickled vegetables, sambal and some crackers.

She ordered the “Chicken with Tomato Tarragon Sauce” which was served with the side of the day (bean salad) and fries. It was served a bit slower than mine, but it was piping hot! Not that mine wasn’t, but judging from the speed it was served, am sure it was pre-prepared. Her chicken was most probably fried upon ordering. It was quite delish too, and the tarragon sauce had quite a distinctive taste to it.

Frankly, am surprised with the decent food quality of this cafe. Guess I have this perception of bad tasting food at office blocks. :P Won’t hesitate to come back should I ever be in the area again. However, I am still baffled as to why “Screaming Bananas”?? Heh.

Christmas Meals

Ho! Ho! Ho! Merry & Blessed Christmas to you all out there. :) Hope you’re pigging out as much as I am. Lol. Tis’ a season to be jolly alright.

xmas1.jpg

It started off with a bang with the office X’mas party and gift exchange. We bought the turkey from one of the nearby hotels to ensure it was fit to everyone’s religious requirements. And ordered some Domino’s just in case there wasn’t enough to go around. Lol. It was lucky we did as the entire turkey and all the pizzas (!) were quickly polished off.

The gift exchange was interesting as it truly showed the nature of the people. It was supposed to be an anonymous thing, where the presents placed under our Christmas tree were randomly picked out by the staff. The budget was at RM20 or thereabouts. Yet obvious recycled gifts (i.e.yellowed, dog eared box) and cheapo gifts (i.e. 2 sticks of Rexona deodarant -wtf?, box of RM5 candy canes etc. etc) kept popping up. what a slap in the face for those who actually put some thought into their selections. next year, we should consider having a sign up list so that only the truly interested join in. spare us the curse of the random gifts.

Anyway the family’s first Christmas gathering at aunt’s house was quite a scrumptious affair. as her domestic helper has gone back for the holidays, it was up to me to help out in the kitchen. We bought a cut of Ham with pineapple and had it sliced before being served. My aunt’s roasted turkey recipe has always been an “east meets west” thing where she uses a chinese inspired rice stuffing. The glutinous rice has to be soaked before being stir-fried in the hot wok with diced mushrooms and dried shrimps together with other accompanying seasonings. It has become my job to stir-fry the rice and one has to slowly add bits of water to ensure that the rice does not stick. When it’s half cooked, the rice is stuffed into the turkey (which has been rubbed with salt & pepper beforehand) and placed into the oven. Any extra rice is then steamed.

I then boil the brussel sprouts, baby carrots and baby potatoes whilst tossing the button mushrooms in a hot pan quickly. then when everything’s ready, i seasoned the vegetables with salt and butter.

it was really gastronomic heaven tucking into this dinner as the glutinous rice has soaked in the turkey’s juices and tasted so moist and tasty! Gravy and cranberry sauce only added to the richness of the turkey and ham. as I can never get enough of brussel sprouts and mushrooms, piled those on my plate quickly. Lol. Bottles of Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon quickly emptied throughout the evening.

Christmas day itself saw a further two feasts for me. The first was organised by my friend whose mother’s Nasi Dagang has been featured on telly. It was another scrumptious spread as the reddish rice was served with quite a wide variety of Kelantanese dishes featuring chicken, beef, fish, prawns etc. It was so delicious. Instantly craved to be in Kota Bharu to eat all the yummy Kelantanese fare again. I wanted to have seconds but as there was another family gathering later, it was best to save some tummy space.

To my friend, thanks for remembering me and inviting me. Was lovely seeing your parents again and felt so thankful to have them extend their hospitality to me once again.

There was of course more turkey with greens for the next family gathering. But it was the seafood spaghetti with white sauce that everyone raved about. the white sauce was laden with fresh seafood such as oysters, prawns, squid and fish, together with mushroom slices. It was so delectable that I asked for some sauce to bring home.

Bubbly

In light of the festive celebrations, bubbly was served. Mhmm. It was quite a nice family gathering as everyone stayed till nearly 6pm and we even had tea together, complete with English tea, minced pies, some German stollen and Italian Panettone etc.

A quick catch up session with an old friend ended the day in a warm manner. Hope you guys enjoyed your Christmas too. With the New Year’s celebration around the corner, have much to look forward to. May 2008 be one of your best years yet!

Allegro Cafe

This neighborhood Italian restaurant opened some years back when I first moved to Subang Jaya. A poor student then, eating here was quite the indulgence. But since I am earning my own keep now, can pop by whenever I feel like it, as I love their thin crust pizzas!

allegro1.jpg

started off with the mushroom soup and garlic bread. the bread was crispy and tasty enough but the soup didn’t do much for me even though it was very thick and creamy.

allegro2.jpg

I chose the Quattro Stagioni pizza which featured beef pepperoni, beef bacon, chicken slices, mushrooms (capsicum actually, but i prefer mushroom) etc. It was heavenly with the abundance of cheese used.

allegro3.jpg

Also had Fettucine Salmon to share and this was a tad too salty for my liking. I believe smoked salmon was used instead which explains the saltier tasting pasta dish. But it was still quite tasty and we finished it all rather quickly.

It was a nice dinner as the eatery was cosy and quiet. Great for my friend & I to catch up over food. Both us agreed that the pizzas are the things to have here.

Restoran LYJ, Sungai Buloh

This restaurant is not a new discovery though it has been almost a year since I last visited it. And during the absence, it has expanded! Very good business indeed. They are maybe most known for their poon choy which I have tried once and surrendered in defeat to the copious amount of meat in that one dish.

lyjpoonchoy.jpg

lyj1.jpg

One of their signature dishes is the Kampung Chicken (白斩鸡) which is served with a gingery dip. The salty but silky chicken slices are tender and juicy and a great accompaniment to the steaming white rice.

lyj2.jpg

We never fail to order this stir-fried noodles (车仔面) which uses the fine emperor noodles. Stir fried with a chockful of ingredients such as prawns, mushroom, chicken, egg, spring onions etc, it’s delicious and flavourful. One of our family’s firm favourite.

lyj3.jpg
This is Claypot Salted Fish with Pork Belly(咸鱼花腩煲). It’s a very aromatic and tasty dish that is sure to have one asking for more rice. The meat has a crispy edge to it, thanks to the high heat of a very hot wok.

lyj4.jpg

The Seafood Claypot (海鲜煲) had a generous amount of cuttlefish, sea cucumber, fish slices, fish maw, pacific clams, prawns, mushrooms, assortment of vegetables etc. It was really well-seasoned and even the cuttlefish, which is normally bland-tasting tasted great.

lyj5.jpg

My aunt is also sure to order the Claypot Grass Carp (瓦堡鲩鱼) everytime we frequent this restaurant. It’s very fresh and tastes a little muddy to me this time. However, don’t remember this taste the other times and was totally loving it. Worth a try indeed.

lyj6.jpg

Our vegetable dish for the night was Stir-fried Kai Lan. It had a hint of chinese wine, which I love.

Overall, a good place for a family dinner as the food is good. Waiting time can be long if you’re there during the dinner crowd so good conversation helps. Lol.

Restoran Kampung Ah Soh, Puchong

Have noticed this restaurant for some time now but have never actually stepped foot into it. The concept is interesting, but I’m even more sold into the “homecooked food” concept. They even have a mock traditional cooker area, with a few chinese rice dumplings hanging there.

They do have a nice selection of items on their menu but I wasn’t feeling particularly excited about them that day. So in the end, I chose two snacks to munch on while my eating companion chose the Village Special Noodle (台湾凳子面). When it came, I think both of us were no longer keen on trying it. Neither one of us were huge fans of the yellow noodles and we were expecting some different handmade noodles. The minced meat was quite tasty though.

台湾凳子面 Village Special Noodle. (RM6.80)

Hakka Yam Abacus (RM6) and Thai Style mango salad (RM4.50)

The two snacks I ordered fared better than the noodles. But the portions were a bit small for the prices charged, esp. the yam abacus. but the salad’s ingredients were quite generous (esp. the peanuts & dried cuttlefish shreds) and i thought everything tasted just right, i.e. well flavoured.

this place offers a variety of rice dumplings too. but these are not freshly made daily as they heat up the frozen dumplings upon any order. i would expect bigger portions for the prices charged but I can see that this restaurant appeals to the nearby office workers due to the decent tasting food. however, i’m in no hurry to return as I don’t remember any particular items in their menu that truly appealed to me.

Pan Heong Restoran

Work has been insanely busy these recent weeks with the year end deadline. There’s very little discovering of new food places as speed & convenience is the key, so packed lunches are the norm mostly. however on a rare stopover at Batu Caves, we decided to try out Pan Heong Restaurant. have heard quite a lot of good things about it and was quite excited. was even more encouraged with the good crowd which left us waiting for a table for a good 10 mins.

Sign above drinks station states that this is the sole Pan Heong, and there are no branches whatsoever out there.

Their signature dishes include the “Sang Har Meen” (Freshwater Prawns Noodles) and porridge. My eating companions thought the prawn noodles were a bit too heavy for a quick lunch so we ordered the fish porridge with century egg. It was served very quickly, and was topped with fried shallots and green spring onions. I quite like the texture of the porridge, with its thick and smooth consistency. However, we all thought the fish slices were a little overcooked. Still, it was very satisfying. At RM10.80 for a serving enough for 3-4 people.

We also ordered a stir-fried kai lan (RM6.50) which gave off the essential wok hei. Crunchy and garlicky, just the way I like it. I saw that quite a few tables eating the Mamak Noodles (RM8) and I was tempted to try it. Despite the vast difference between the look of these noodles with those you get at authentic Mamak restaurants, it tasted just as good, if not better. However, if you love spicy food, this may not satisfy your spicy cravings. But I reckon one can always ask for extra chilli. Another noodle dish that got my thumbs up!

Overall, food was satisfyingly yummy and served quickly. Regretted not ordering the signature prawn noodles but there’s always next time. Practically salivated over next table’s noodles, drenched with the egg sauce. edited 12.12.07: finally tried the star dish of the restaurant and it tasted every bit as good as it looks!

Noticed that the steamed fish was also a big hit with the regulars. More trivia on this restaurant : chef/owner is Tnah Boon Chong who started out under a big tree in a wooden shack in 1988. Now it has relocated to this shoplot and business is so good that diners have to queue for a table on weekends!
